Programme Note
My Flute Quartet was written in 1983 and revised this year. Like my Brass Quintet from the same period it is a brief work in a single movement with a fair number of short sections. Although these alternate fast and slower tempi the predominant feeling of the work draws on one aspect of the flute as an instrument - its light and mercurial characteristics. Even in the slower passages the music is bright and fleeting in mood as the tempo markings for each section suggest :

Cappricioso : Doppio movimento : Cappricioso : Scherzando : Cappricioso : Doppio movimento

What is also apparent from the above is the form of the piece. The use of varied repetition giving a clear relationship with both rondo and arch forms.
